Construction

Our theme this week was construction, another one of Bud's favorite things.  His love for all things "construction site" related began when our friends gave him the book Goodnight Goodnight Construction Site a while back--and it has grown and grown ever since.  So as you might imagine, it was a fun week in our little schoolhouse!

We read a couple of construction themed books this week.  Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel is a classic.  I read it when I was little, and it makes my heart so happy that my little bud loves it as much as I do.  In addition to the fun storyline and fantastic illustrations, the underlying message is an important one: to never give up on who and what you care about--and to work hard to get the job done.

We also read B Is For Bulldozer, which was a great way to sneak an alphabet lesson into our construction theme.  Roadwork and Machines at Work are other fun construction books that show the different types of construction vehicles, as well as the construction process itself.  I don't know if I'm the only mom out there that struggles to differentiate an excavator from a bulldozer, but I have actually learned a lot from these different stories!  We have a great little collection of tiny construction vehicles too so Bud had fun matching his toy vehicles to those in the story and acting out portions of the stories too.

We also got our bodies working just like construction vehicles.  I discovered these amazing printable on Pinterest (side note: how did I ever survive the pre-Pinterest ages?!) for construction themed movement cards, and so Bud and I did some "construction yoga" together.  It was fun and also hilarious.  My little citizen, like most, is an active guy so it's wonderful when we get to incorporate movement activities into our lessons--and into our life.  Learning to control his body and to use it in positive ways is a valuable lesson in and of itself; so this one was a win/win.

"Tipping like a dump truck" during our construction yoga activity!

We also did some play learning this week.  Bud decided he wanted to build "a golf course and a castle" so we sorted our blocks by color and then loaded up our dump truck, counting each block one at a time.  Color sorting and counting fit so naturally into this lesson--and Bud made an amazing block structure too.  It was a true hard hat zone though because knocking it all down is perhaps his favorite part.

We loved turning our little schoolhouse into a construction site!
